The Rechargeable Battery HowTo / Tips

Buy Batteries

How to care for your Ni-MH or Ni-Cad battery.

Ever had a rechargeable battery that would be going along at full power and suddenly die after only a few minutes? Then it would start working again after you gave it a short rest? Or maybe you have a laptop computer that got 4 hours the first 5 times you used it and has never gotten beyond 2 hours since?

After much research, personal experience as a computer tech, and experimentation I believe I have come up with the battery usage guidelines that will get the most out of your batteries. However, I do not claim to be a battery expert. Follow these guidelines at your own risk or gain. I offer my knowledge as a free service to my fellow man.

You know you have problems if your battery dies in the middle of usage and you can turn it on and use it for 20 more minutes.

    1. Don't use the product while the battery is charging
    2. Don't charge the battery in partially, let it do a complete charge
    3. If the product allows you to do so, remove the battery while plugged in to power(Most laptops and other products allow you to use the product without the battery, consult your manual for any warnings against this. Some items such as beard trimmers have warnings against this.)
    4. Don't leave the battery plugged in to the wall outlet when it is not charging.
    5. Don't submit the battery to humid conditions.
    6. Discharge and charge the battery fully 3 times if it stops working properly
    7. For best results discharge and recharge the battery every 10 days.
    8. Don't charge battery for at least 15 minutes after discharging it.
    9. Don't use battery until at least 15 minutes after charging it.
    10. Don't leave the battery in a discharged state for more than a few days.
    11. Check the battery contacts every 2 years for corosion or substances on the contacts. Try wiping them off with dry towel. If necessary clean with wire brush.
